Wayne Pacelle, CEO and President, The Humane Society of the United States spoke in Atlanta and Athens on the state of the animal protection movement in the United States. On Thursday, September 14th, Atlanta Dog Spa and Whole Foods Market-Buckhead hosted a lunchtime meet-and-greet with Mr. Pacelle. Some of the topics he discussed included:
- The HSUS’s support for and appreciation of conscientious businesses that establish animal welfare standards such as Whole Foods Market, and factory farming issues.
- Anti-dog fighting legislation The HSUS is supporting next session closing loopholes in the existing Georgia law and outlawing “hog dog” fighting.
- The HSUS’s response to Hurricane Katrina, where our efforts resulted in the rescue of more than 10,000 animals in Louisiana and Mississippi, and our ongoing assistance in the reconstruction of the animal care infrastructure.
- Congress passing the Pets Evacuation Transportation and Standards (PETS) Act that will require states to include pets and service animals in disaster plans in order to qualify for federal aid.
