PEACE, LOVE & DOGS

The Atlanta Dog Spa was a happening scene recently when a number of guest arrived to mix, mingle, eat, drink and take an occasional nap in the shade.

The tail-wagging crowd was there for the second annual Woofstock, a party and Homeless Pets Foundation benefit celebrating the fifth birthday of beagle buddy Boomer, whose mom, Sarah Segal, opened the spa four years ago just for him.

“I wanted a day care for Boomer that was cage-free and where I could see him during the day,” Segal says, Realizing no such place existed in Atlanta at the time, Segal decided to open a day care herself.

Some 100 clients later, Segal and her staff of 13 have delivered exactly what she envisioned for Boomer with a variety of services, including cage-free day care and boarding, 7,000 square feet of play space, Web cams enabling owners to peek in on their pets, obedience training, and bathing and grooming in a “clean, home-style environment.”

Dogs have their own lockers, can relax in a living room complete with sofas and a TV airing canine movies, and are free to play safely because they are separated by size and temperament, with no aggressive dogs allowed in the facility.

Segal. Who teaches Hebrew and religious school at The Temple, attributes the Dog Spa’s success to “a lot if advertising and word of mouth.  We were busy from the start.  Everyone loved the concept –– we are the only dog day care with grassy play space.  And we take care of the dogs like they are our own.”

Located in midtown across the street from the Atlanta Humane Society,  the spa also has a small shop where customers ca buy all-natural Nutro dog food and basic supplies such as leashes, collars and bandannas.

And clients can always except to be invited to the occasional canine bar mitzvah or birthday party.
